Date of Harvest vs. Best Before Date
The harvest date best indicates the freshness of olive oil.
In Greece, olives are harvested once a year by producers from late autumn to winter. If you are considering purchasing olive oil, choose oil made on the most recent harvest date. Products that do not have the harvest month and year written on the oil bottle make it impossible to determine the freshness of the contents, so choosing such oil is risky.
Good quality olive oil can have a shelf life of two years after bottling. Basically, companies set the shelf life of bottled olive oil at two years. Moreover, this two-year period is only applicable to high-quality oils.
Poor quality olives, which have already begun to decay and smell bad from the pressing stage, are out of the question from the start. Even high-quality olive oil can have its shelf life shortened if stored poorly.
Therefore, for your health, we recommend choosing products with a clearly stated harvest date when purchasing olive oil.
